The rich saturation of color in Lisa Johnson's ground-breaking photographic vision documents not only some of culture's most important rock star guitars, but also recounts how the instrument itself has become the essential symbol of rock. Her bold use of unusually low depth-of-field photography visually caresses the instrument in the way a skillful musician might - zeroing in on subtle gradations in a guitar's patina or hugging the curves of another's silhouette. Johnson accompanies her images with text cultivated from interviews with the proud guitar owners, revealing the personality of the musician who plays the instrument while her images revere the instrument itself. Johnson provides up-close inspection of guitars, including those of Eric Clapton, Les Paul, Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Rick Nielsen, Brian Setzer, Chrissie Hynde, Ace Frehley, Carlos Santana, Jack White and many others. Here, the guitar is made exotic, sensuous, and evocative - it transforms from an instrument into an artwork.

Includes padded-leatherette hardcover book, 16-page booklet describing inspiration behind project, and black guitar pick printed with one of three holographic foil designs.

{PRETITLE} 108 Rock Star Guitars {POSTTITLE}

I don't usually write reviews but I had to for this. I bought this book as a gift and thought it was so magnificent, I kept it for myself and ordered another! It's absolutely gorgeous from cover to cover and looks amazing on my coffee table. I've always looked at guitars as artworks themselves and these photos really capture that. These images focus mostly on sections of the guitar and show the details that you don't see in other guitar books--and I have several. It's like you can look into the very heart and soul of the musician by looking at the interesting markings and wear and tear on the instrument and the angles and warm lighting really bring these guitars to life. Every time I look through the book, I see something I didn't notice before. Yes, some of the guitar greats one might expect to see are not here, notably Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray and others--the book could have easily been 208 Rock Star Guitars--plenty of the big names are included, Jimmy Page, Bruce, Ace Frehely, Keith Richards, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Slash, Rick Nielsen, Robby Krieger, Jack White and the list goes on. The stories that Johnson includes about the shoots and the guitars themselves are really interesting, too.

I received this book as a gift from a friend. When i received the 10lb book in the mail, I was amazed to see this up close and personal. The leather bound cover makes this the quintessential coffee table book and a perfect gift for Christmas! I ended up purchasing 2 of these for friends of mine as they are big photography fans. The book goes into fine detail and photos of guitars and the authors recollection of how she photographed some of these guitars is a wonderful angle to showcasing these photos. Each page is done with high fine print and very classy. So glad to have received this book! Words cannot describe the beauty that lies within this wonderful collection of photographs from Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and many many others!
