{PRETITLE} Music {POSTTITLE}

Let's face it. It takes guts to call your own book "definitive". But yes, this book is. Does it cover everything about music in-depth for all-time. No. That's impossible. Any more than their (also definitive, and quite mind blowing) "Science Fiction: The Illustrated Encyclopedia" could tell you EVERYTHING about sci-fi. But both books accomplish what they set out to do, and by that I mean:

You get an overview of pretty much everything that is essential.

There isn't really any gaping gap with major categories overlooked (people can argue that their favorite artist or sub-genre wasn't included, but I really don't think it's necessary to put German Speed Pirate Progressive Metal or Ska Punk Reggae Dirty Blues (okay, I made that last one up, but i didn't make up the first) on their own pages. What is covered is covered extremely well. If you knew absolutely nothing about music this book could teach you the basics, and then you can find more extensive, exhaustive, detailed knowledge in a book on the sub-genre that interests you. Thus...

You will discover new things

Like "The Guinness Book of Film", unless you are the unholy Emperor Geek of Awesome Musical Nerdiness and disciples climb a mountain to get to your cave filled with vacuum tube audio devices and ancient recordings, you likely missing SOMETHING in your musical education. Even at age 15 when I was at the Zenith of my film buff powers I learned things from the GBOF, and I know a thousand times as much about films as I do about music. For someone like me who loves music but could stand to broaden their horizons, this book will fill in the gaps nicely.

You will see and you will understand

Gorgeous photographs, lovely formatting, and excellent writing.
