{PRETITLE} John Varvatos: Rock in Fashion {POSTTITLE}
I like it. Great candid shots. I love Varvatos ' designs. My critique is not so much of this very cool book, but how the subject matter always gets treated. The period Varvatos covers is broad, but much of it is the 70's. Despite contemporary urban hipster romanticism for all things Punk and/or androgynous from that period, Progressive rock was vey popular at the time, like it or not. Pink Floyd was always sufficiently edgy to continue getting props today, and no one in the urban hipster (and now Fashion) worlds would ever want to actually admit that Queen was part of this genre. I can't quite picture very many representatives of the NY fashion world in the 1970s, shlepping to "unsophisticated" Long Island to actually see a Queen concert at the Nassau Coluseum. But posthumously, they have fallen in love with Freddie Mercury. Nearly four years before the Ramones donned motorcycle jackets, tee shirt, and jeans, Peter Gabriel (Genesis) wore the exact same thing for his stage persona ( a rebellious teen graffiti artist) in the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Members of YES were always glammed out as were Roxy Music. It was not just The New York Dolls, Brian Eno was as androgynous and brilliant as David Bowie, but barely regarded by those "subject defining" contemporary Urban Hipsters. I wont try to make a case for Jethro Tull. NY fashion and renaissance festival people will never make peace. At least recognize the genre regardless of bias. Punk Rocks push back of the day was against the perceived pretentiousness of English prog. Today's waxing Punk nostalgia seems blissfully unaware of the reverse irony.By David Dicarlo
It's a great gift. I do like these types of books, but I always like hundreds of photographs on a topic. This has plently, and it's well done. Arrived before the due date.By cathy c.
